Italian PM arrives in Seoul for meeting with South Korean president

(MENAFN) Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni arrives in Seoul on Sunday ahead of a scheduled summit with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, according to official information.

Prior to her meeting with Lee, Meloni visits the Seoul National Cemetery, a site dedicated to honoring those who lost their lives during the Korean War, as stated by reports.

President Lee is set to welcome Meloni for formal discussions on Monday, a visit described as historically significant. It marks the first time in nearly 20 years that an Italian prime minister travels to South Korea for bilateral talks, as well as the first visit by a European leader since Lee took office last June.

Following the discussions, both sides are expected to conclude and sign a number of bilateral agreements.

South Korea is identified as Italy’s fourth-largest trade partner in Asia and represents Italy’s leading Asian export destination when measured on a per-capita basis.

Trade between the two countries has grown consistently since the implementation of the South Korea–EU free trade agreement in 2012, with bilateral exchange rising from just over $8 billion that year to $12.6 billion in 2024.

Italy and South Korea formally established diplomatic relations in 1956.

Meloni arrives in Seoul from Japan as part of a three-country tour, which previously included a stop in Oman.
