Iran Calls in Italy's Ambassador Over Tajani's "Irresponsible" Remarks
Ambassador Paola Amadei was summoned by Alireza Yousefi, director general for Western Europe at the ministry, one day after Tajani announced on X that Italy would urge EU partners to classify the IRGC as a terrorist organization, accusing it of using violence during recent protests, according to Tehran.
Yousefi denounced Tajani's statements, highlighting the IRGC's legal standing as a component of Iran's armed forces and cautioning about the "destructive" ramifications of such designation. Amadei indicated she would transmit Iran's objection to her government.
Demonstrations triggered by the rial's dramatic devaluation have engulfed Iranian cities since late December. While initially peaceful, the protests intensified into violent confrontations that resulted in casualties and inflicted damage on public infrastructure, including mosques, government buildings, and banks. Tehran has attributed the upheaval to the United States and Israel.
