Italy Plans Troop Deployment in Milan After Weekend Riots

(MENAFN) Italy plans to send 500 soldiers with police powers to Milan following violent incidents during weekend demonstrations over rising living costs, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced Tuesday.

The deployment forms part of a broader security package expected to receive approval from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Cabinet later Tuesday, according to reports.

Speaking at an event in Rome, Tajani said the proposed measures would also introduce restrictions intended to prevent minors from engaging in criminal activities.

“The government's response will be very firm to ensure free commerce and the free movement of citizens in city centres,” he said.

Violence erupted Saturday alongside a protest over the rising cost of living and continued into Sunday. Groups of young people damaged shopfronts and looted retail outlets and supermarkets before leaving the area.

The clashes left 14 police officers injured after rioters threw stones, bottles and flares. More than 270 people were taken into custody, with minors accounting for approximately 80% of those detained.

Tajani emphasized the distinction between people exercising their right to demonstrate peacefully and those involved in the destruction.

“Peaceful demonstrations are legitimate because we live in a democracy, but those who devastated downtown Milan are criminals, often without political motives,” he said.

He also raised questions about whether the violence had been coordinated, adding: “We'll have to see if there was any orchestration behind it.”
